Unplanning Travel
TravelPassRole:
Multimedia Designer & Data Analyst
THAT partnered with Travel Pass in 2023 to change the landscape of travel planning. So we::
1. Facilitated two workshops talking to insiders and outsiders and discovered 300+ insights around travel planning.
2. Deliver the strategic reports of three potential themes.
3. Workshoped with stakeholders and came up with 300+ idea, then baked them into 25 golden ideas, then to the final one: An AI generated content tool for social sharing.
4. Meet with the group and iterate 8 times
5. And we did it!

Strategy Development
Applying the unique Dum Dum research, I talked to 10 people in the organization and 10 outsiders who have their insights around planning and synthesized 300+ insights discovered in both workshop and narrowed the strategy to 3 themes: Unplanning Travel, Vacation Starts Now, Re-brand “tourist”
Generated 300+ ideas through workshop and synthesize them into 25, TravelPass decide to go with the direction of an AI generated content tool for social sharing, the goal of this app is to create unexpected experiences and unique travel plans for users. Based on our two months scope, we decided to build a guided travel experience in which user will progress through questions, it will send them a customized future trip postcard.
Ideas Development
Since we had the basic framework, I start to test ChatGPT’s liability in generating stories that feels “unplanned” and “fun”: Strategies that I implemented:
1. Ask it to play as a character in the movie or base on.
2. Ask it to answer from the game designer perspective.
3. Ask it to write in specific travel journalists’ writing styles.
4. Ask it to answer as a specific comedian
Of all these, 4 was the most fun one as it returns me this:
Wasn’t bad but also wasn’t good as I expected. I noticed that when given a more specific writing styles, its writings became more creative. So I begin to ask it according an author’s style. The results look like:
(Writer: Arundhati Roy)
Rebalanced, but far from the standard.
So I started to prompt ChatGPT with step by step guide, I asked it to analyze each author’s style, then write according to the styles given. The results looked like:
(Writer: Arundhati Roy)
Also playing with it 20+ times I realized all the experience it generated was really tied to the location it selected. So I asked it to return 100 weirdest places in the world, and it start to return results like Giant Rabbit Sculpture Park (Yes it’s a real place!):
Applying the “most __ destination” strategy gave us 1400+ options.
Prompt Engineering Strategy:
Generate destination > Generate authors according to destinations > Analyze Authors’ writing styles > generate response
We then got 1400+ postcard materials.
Finalization
To deliver a experience related to travel, suitcase was chosen as the medium. After a few rounds of iterations, I came up with the idea to d
